Fairmont’s Offset Hand Tong: the Knuckle Saver
Grease Duct is made out of 16 ga Black Iron; the standard means of connecting one end to another is by bending all four sides of the raw edge into a 90 degree angle, typically 1/4” in length, and then butting up to another section done the same way and then adding a weld around the circumference. Although Bending the 16 ga edge to a 90 degree angle can be done on a Hand Brake, some shops find it faster to take a Fairmont Offset tong, flip it over so that the handles are elevated and using that leverage to bend the 16 gauge thickness.
Not all Tongs are created equal and that certainly is true when it comes to the Fairmont Tongs. While cheaper brands are available and may last for a few years, it’s not uncommon to see 50 year old Fairmont Tongs in many shops still working as well today as they were 50 years ago.
