Whether it’s Rectangular Trunk Lines or the Round Pipe branching off from them, externally Wrapped Duct is the most common method of Insulating metal ductwork. Though it cannot reach the acoustical benefits of Internal Duct Liner, Externally insulated Fiberglass Duct Wrap achieves the same equivalence in thermals / R Value and does so without fibers in the airstream.
The John’s Manville Microlite Duct Wrap is an FSK foil back jacket with a Formaldehyde Free white Binder that cuts easily and without much dust.
The 3/4 lb density is most common on HVAC ductwork, with R-4.2 achieved at 2” thickness, R6 at 2.13” thickness, R8 at 3” thickness, and R12 at 4″ thickness.
